Teaching Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) to adults presents both unique challenges and opportunities. Adults often have specific goals and clear expectations regarding what they want to achieve with language learning, which requires careful selection of teaching materials. It’s important to choose resources that fit their learning pace and particular needs, whether for personal, professional, or academic purposes. In this post, I’ll share some guides I’ve used in my classes with adults that have been effective in meeting these objectives.
ELE Actual (Ediciones SM)
This guide focuses on practical communication and contextualized grammar, making it suitable for adult learners who aim to learn effectively and quickly. Its logical progression allows for gradual advancement, while varied activities keep students engaged. However, its focus on grammar might be a bit intensive for those who prefer a lighter or more conversational approach.
Embarque (Editorial Edelsa)
"Embarque" offers a communicative approach, ideal for adults who wish to learn Spanish through current topics and everyday situations. It also provides a wealth of supplementary material, which helps adapt to different learning styles. The only drawback is that its structure might be somewhat rigid for students who prefer more flexibility in their lessons.
Aula (Editorial Difusión)
"Aula" follows an inductive method, focusing on active student participation. This dynamic approach allows adult learners to take charge of their own learning, which can be very motivating. The activities are contextualized, making the content relevant and applicable to real life. However, this method requires the teacher to be very proactive in guiding the class and creating a consistently participatory environment.
Selecting guides for teaching ELE to adults should align with their goals and personal needs. "ELE Actual," "Embarque," and "Aula" offer different but complementary approaches that can be effective depending on the student profile. Providing additional materials for those who wish to delve deeper into specific topics or areas of interest is also essential.
