One of the most challenging skills in language learning is the ability to communicate orally. Developing fluency and confidence in conversation is essential for students to use the language effectively in real-life situations. Conversation-focused guides can be a powerful tool to support this process. Below, I share some guides I’ve used in my classes that have been effective in helping students gain confidence in their speaking skills.
Tema a Tema (Editorial Edelsa)
This guide is structured around specific conversation topics, allowing students to practice a wide range of communicative situations. Its thematic approach facilitates learning vocabulary and phrases related to each context, and open-ended questions encourage discussion. However, to maximize its effectiveness, it is recommended to complement it with additional oral practice to deepen fluency.
Hablar por los Codos (Editorial Edelsa)
"Hablar por los Codos" focuses on the use of idiomatic and colloquial phrases, making it ideal for advanced students who want to sound more natural and fluent. This guide introduces students to expressions not always found in traditional textbooks, giving them an edge in real conversations. However, it may be challenging for beginners, so it’s best used with students who already have a solid foundation in the language.
Using conversation-focused guides is key to developing oral fluency in language learners. "Tema a Tema" and "Hablar por los Codos" are excellent resources that can help students improve their conversational skills, but it’s always important to adapt these guides to the needs and proficiency levels of each student. Complementing them with additional practice and interactive activities can make a significant difference in their progress.
Do you know of other conversation guides that have been useful in your classes? We’d love to hear your opinions and experiences in the comments!
